Essay about Transformation Augustines Journey to...

You prompt us yourself to find satisfaction in appraising you, since you made us tilted toward you, and our heart is unstable until stabilized in you. Quintessentially, this quote from Confessions symbolizes Augustine’s perilous journey towards Christianity. Although appearing earlier in what is colloquially known as the â€Å"first autobiography†, Augustine expounds on this very idea throughout his writings. Whether that includes his attraction and disdain for Manichaeism or his affinity with Neo-Platonism, one could argue this quote acted as the foundation of his inquisitions of these pre-modern dogmatic sects. Whether by acting out his erotic desires or by playful thievery, Augustine delved into examining the nature of sin as a means of understanding man’s true intentions with every action. As Augustine discussed and acted out his sexual desires, he stood firm to his idea that he did it out of an innocent need for love. In addition, Augustine’s pear theft acted as a means of showing that one who commits a criminal offense may not fully understand all of the implications it may hold for that person. We begin Augustine’s attraction to Manichaeism with his travels to Carthage. His initial reaction to Carthage was shock, due to the citizen’s audacious affinity towards things which distracted them from God’s benevolence. One prominent example of this was their affinity towards theatre acts which depicted scenes of enjoying things irrelevant to how one should love God. Although this struck Augustine as quite odd, he nonetheless enjoyed these theatrical acts, often positively remarking about scenes of immense sadness and depression. He came to question whether or not pity, as shared by the citizens of Carthage, was meant as an indication to what his life should represent. The two were former inmates who met in prison. After their release, the men meet up for what Dick calls Aa perfect emailprotected As it turns out, Dick=s cell mate had worked for the Clutters some years earlier and suggested to Dick that he check into employment at the Clutters= farm because the Clutters were such friendly, kindhearted people. The more Dick learned about the Clutters, the more he considered seeking fast cash as opposed to employment. During the trial in the last chapter of the book, however, Dick admitted that his sexual interest in teenage girls was the most powerful force in his decision to invade the Clutters= home. (Perry stopped him from harming Nancy.) Finally, the killers were identified by Dick=s former cell mate and tracked down in Las Vegas. In the time leading up to their arrest, the reader is offered greater insight into the characters of the two men. Because Perry opposed Dick=s crude behavior and showed compassion for the people Dick intended to harm or slight, we are left to feel a bit of sympathy for him. It becomes tempting to see Dick as the manipulative leader and Perry as the helpless follower. After the suspects were taken into custody, Perry eventually confessed that he had killed Herb, Bonnie, Nancy, and Kenyon tied each of them up, made sure they were comfortable, then shot each of them in the head with a shotgun. In addition, it was Perry who cut Herb=s throat. Though Dick didn=t actually pull the trigger or hold the knife, he shined the flashlight into the faces of the victims as Perry killed them. Both men were found guilty of 4 counts of premeditated murder, and each was sentenced to death. While awaiting their executions, they appealed several times, losing each time, but managing to have their execution dates postponed. They were finally executed (by hanging) in April of 1966. Genre, structure, persona, and style. In Cold Blood is one of the first successful nonfiction novels. Capote takes actual details and events concerning the murders of the Clutter family and weaves them into what sometimes seems like a fictional tale. The manner in which he leads the reader into shock gives the impression that the story has been fabricated with the sole intention of creating such shock. (For example: Throughout the first half of the book, Capote convinces us that Perry is the least evil of the two killers, that he is least capable of inflicting the sort of violence to which the Clutters were subjected. We are given the impression that Dick must be the one who pulled the trigger and cut Herb Clutter=s throat, for he is apparently the boldest, the most brutal, the most heartless of the two. Capote reveals much later in the story, however, that it was actually Perry who killed the four people in the Clutter=s house that night. Such an unexpected twist seems almost fictional, too well-crafted to be true.) We must continue to remind ourselves that the events actually took place that the story is nonfiction, as unbelievable as it may seem at times. .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 , .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 .postImageUrl , .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 , .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1:hover , .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1:visited , .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1:active { border:0!important; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1:active , .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1 .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ucccb9ace9b821ed49e2e9aa3aebcaae1:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Irony Analysis EssayCapote tells the story in a way that makes the reader feel like he or she is being told about the characters by a close acquaintance of each individual character. The Forgotten Prejudice Essay Research Paper Prejudice free essay sample

The Forgotten Prejudice Essay, Research Paper Prejudice is defined certainly as the mistreatment of a individual or people due to a preconceived prejudice. In Britain today there is an compulsion with non being racialist, and to a lesser extent, non being male chauvinist. However rampant homophobia still exists and noone sees fit to knock. So here we go # 8230 ; .. Homophobia ; the word itself is a simbol of the difference between the sentiments of society on the mistreatment of cheery people compared to the mistreatment of adult females or cultural minority groups. The word suggests an irrational fright, instead than a offense or bias as racism sexism and agism do. Bing homosexual is a natural thing. Having observed the disgusting biass that seem to travel manus in manus with homosexualism in our society, one imagine that noone would Choose to be gay. You can non take who you fall in love with. When you hit puberty, you find yourself attracted to people. We will write a custom essay sample on The Forgotten Prejudice Essay Research Paper Prejudice or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page You do non consciously make up ones mind to be straight. Therefore one conclude that you do non consciously make up ones mind to be cheery. Finally, many species of wild animate beings ( including camelopard, monkeys and birds ) have displayed homosexual behavior. Therefore homosexualism does happen in nature. Some people claim that being homosexual is unnatural. Clearly they are incorrect. Many people base their averments that being homosexual is incorrect or in some manner pervert on their spiritual beliefs. This one find incredable. God makes adult male in his image, he has a intent for each of us etc. Why so would he do some people gay if being homosexual is unbearable to him. If homosexualism is a wickedness, and God makes some people gay, what sort of average fast one is that? ( I know that that is a really simplis tic manner of stating it ) . God purportedly loves everyone. Would he desire the ostracision of some of his kids because of their sexual preferance? Some people claim that there is something ‘wrong’ with the heads of homosexual people, in other words proposing that they are mentally disturbed or unnatural. If this was true, would it be an alibi for their mistreatment? It may be true that the encephalon of a cheery individual may be different in some manner from the head of a consecutive individual ( one dont know ) But the head of a adult male is different to that of a adult female. As one hope we all see, different does non intend inferior. And wouldnt it be God that is responsible for those differences? We do non populate in an equal society, and likely neer will. Peoples are non equal until everyone in society is treated on the footing of the content of their character and non on their age, gender, societal category, cultural beginning, or gender. Their are non arguements that can warrant the intervention of cheery people as 2nd category citezens. Peoples are prepared to overlook mistreatment. Why arent homosexual people allowed to acquire married? Marriage is non strictly about reproduction ; sterile twosomes arent forbidden from acquiring married. Marriage should be about love. Peoples should be treated with compassion. Until every member of society is treated reasonably, non of its members are treated reasonably. I can non digest bias, in any of its signifiers, and i hope that people who have read this agree. It is easy to defend causes that have already been fought, such as gender and racial equality. One twenty-four hours homophobia should be treated with equal disdain. Currently it is seen as an acceptable sentiment. This is clearly a serious societal job.

Media horror trailer breif Essays

Media horror trailer breif Essays Media horror trailer breif Essay Media horror trailer breif Essay For my media coursework I will be making a horror film trailer, this will be done by filming and editing ourselves. The sub genre of our trailer is a slasher film (sometimes referred to as body count films and dead teenager movies) involving a psychopathic killer, who stalks and murders a series of victims, in this case teenagers as it follows the typical conventions of a slasher, which helps the audience associated the trailer to a certain genre, also another trademark for this type is that the killer wears a mask to hide his/her identity. Although this is a well used method, it still leaves the audience in panic. I studied past years horror trailers and analysed what worked, and what didnt, I found the more successful trailers used teenagers as the victims and sound tracked with an eerie, fast paced song brought more tension to the trailer as it doesnt give the audience much insight on how the film will out end, but leaves enigma codes to suggest possible outcomes. It highlighted that even the smallest elements, such as a tree in the background, can ruin the mise-en-scene. We learnt filming and editing techniques by creating short films. Also we studied a Channel 4 TV programme, 50 Scarriest Moments and depicted the most effective methods used to create impact on its target audience. The target audience will be aimed at the 15-24 year old bracket and by using teenage characters it allows the viewer to be able to relate to these victims and increases the disturbing atmosphere so that they can maintain interest in the text. The title for the film will be Basement, the audience can also relate t o this as most houses have a basement which they feel comfortable in, so this trailer will go against this and present what evil can occur in a place where some feel safe. A usual assumption with horror films is that itll leave you in discomfort and fear of whats safe but the genre also has its pleasures. These are because when youre in a cinema or at home watching a film youre in the comfort of others and you can escape from reality and live anothers life, but without the physical pain, which cant be done any other way, but films allow this. I would categorize this as a date movie because its not overly gory, like in splasher style films such as the Saw trilogy where it can leave the audience feeling slightly nauseous. The function of a trailer is to advertise the final film which would be for theatrical release at cinemas. The narrative will follow a non-linear pattern and fits into Todorovs theory. It will consist of an equilibrium, dis-equilibrium and a new equilibrium. The trailer will depict snapshots of various scenes and will have a un-close ending, this is so the whole storyline is completely given away so it leaves the audience with questions that provoke them to go see the full length film. The character playing the killer in the trailer is a tall, well built male with ragged, long hair. In terms of iconography, a large male fits into a stereotype used commonly throughout horror genres. Clothing is also used to represent good and bad characters as certain colours have connotations, for example the killer would be wearing a dark, scruffy coat with glimpses of red to symbolise danger and evil, but the teenagers would wear lighter colours to show innocence and purity. It wont be a dis-figuered human or even monster-like but instead a normal looking man which you may least expect to conatin so muc h evil, can be more frightening as youd expect them to be harmless. The trailer will have a fast paced song that builds tension, supported by quick cuts and dynamic transitions to keep the audience engaged. Simple techniques that can be use to represent time, mood, place and events will be added, for example, putting a grey scale onto a clip symbolises it was in the past or was one of the characters memories. Also if seens containing danger are shot with a low-key lighting it will suggest the sinister thret. In terms of music i will mainly using a song from an professional artist, but to create sound effects and to select how the music builds up i can experiment with a programme called Garage Band. The trailer will be topped off with a voice-over spoken in a deap, male tone which could be represented or linked to the killer. The editing software i will use to edit the trailer will be Sony Vegas 7.0 and possibly I-Movie which is on Apple Mac computers, the scenes will be filmed used a mini-DV camera attached to a tripod when needed to get still shots and panning shots without it looking like a home movie. Tasks are shared within the group so we all do an equal load.

Understanding the Nazi Idea of Volksgemeinschaft

Understanding the Nazi Idea of Volksgemeinschaft The Volksgemeinschaft was a central element in Nazi thinking, although it has proved difficult for historians to determine whether this was an ideology or just a nebulous concept built from propaganda displays. Essentially the Volksgemeinschaft was a new German society which rejected old religions, ideologies, and class divisions, instead forming a united German identity based around ideas of race, struggle, and state leadership. The Racist State The aim was the creation of the Volk, a nation or people made up of the most superior of the human races. This concept was derived from a simplistic corruption of Darwinian and relied on Social Darwinism, the idea that humanity was composed of different races, and these competed with one another for dominance: only the best race would lead after a survival of the fittest. Naturally the Nazis thought they were the Herrenvolk- Master Race- and they considered themselves to be pure Aryans; every other race was inferior, with some like Slavs, Romany, and Jews at the bottom of the ladder, and while the Aryans had to be kept pure, the bottom could be exploited, hated and eventually liquidated. The Volksgemeinschaft was thus inherently racist and contributed greatly to the Nazi’s attempts at mass extermination. The Nazi State The Volksgemeinschaft didn’t just exclude different races, as competing ideologies were also rejected. The Volk was to be a one party state where the leader- currently Hitler- was accorded unquestioning obedience from his citizens, who handed over their freedoms in exchange for- in theory- their part in a smoothly functioning machine. ‘Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer’: one people, one empire, one leader. Rival ideas like democracy, liberalism or- especially repugnant to the Nazis- communism was rejected, and many of their leaders arrested and imprisoned. Christianity, despite being promised protection from Hitler, also had no place in the Volk, as it was a rival to the central state and a successful Nazi government would have brought it to an end. Blood and Soil Once the Volksgemeinschaft had pure members of its master race, it needed things for them to do, and the solution was to be found in an idealistic interpretation of German history. Everyone in the Volk was to work together for the common good but to do it in accordance with mythical German values which portrayed the classic noble German as a land working peasant giving the state their blood and their toil. Blut und Boden, Blood and Soil, was a classic summary of this view. Obviously, the Volk had a large urban population, with many industrial workers, but their tasks were compared to and portrayed as part of this grand tradition. Of course traditional German values went hand in hand with the subjugation of women’s interests, widely restricting them to being mothers. The Volksgemeinschaft was never written about or explained in the same way as rival ideas like communism, and may simply have been a highly successful propaganda tool rather than anything the Nazi leaders genuinely believed in. Equally, members of German society did, in places, show a commitment to the creation of the Volk. Consequently, we arent really sure to what extent the Volk was a practical reality rather than a theory, but Volksgemeinschaft does show quite clearly that Hitler wasnt a socialist or a communist, and instead pushed a race-based ideology. To what extent would it have been enacted if the Nazi state had been successful? The removal of races the Nazis considered lesser had begun, as had the march into living space to be turned into the pastoral ideal. Its possible it would have been put entirely in place, but would almost certainly have varied by region as the power games of the Nazi leaders reached a head.

Rewriting a job description Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Rewriting a job description - Term Paper Example It will also show the appropriate time in which one would determine the need to create a job position within a business. Additionally, it will analyze the duties that a job description would require and the performance requirements of the job title. Finally, in the analysis process, it will state the preexisting knowledge and skills required for the position then trying to rewrite chosen job description. The subtractions and additions made during the rewriting of the job description will factor in the paper, with reasons to support the move. The job posting chosen is one for a logistics and brokerage coordinator. How and when would one determine the need to create a job position within a business? The first step towards hiring needed staff is the establishment of the staffing need (Mader-Clark, 2008). For instance, it is of no substantial value to hire staff just because there is an overflow of business income. This is to mean there should be much reason to prove the hiring move is s ignificant at that time. Essentially, it is necessary for a business not to have deadwood on staffing. This is due to the hiring of employees without factoring in their job descriptions. Sequentially, this becomes a waste of business resources as employees receive salaries for doing nothing or tend to concentrate their efforts on one task. Therefore, the creation of a job position relies on the need to have an individual occupy the position (Mader-Clark, 2008). In addition, the right time for hiring new employees is when a business is expanding creating new branches. Generally, a business that is growing would most certainly look to have more staff aboard its stable, unlike a stagnating business. Therefore, it is critical to ascertain whether there are enough funds available to pay the new employee (Mader-Clark, 2008). Secondly, there needs to be a workload that needs lifting off the existing staff to make them efficient in their work out put. In essence, a business should do the hi ring when it feels it is ready to take on the hurdles that may arise with the increased work force (Mader-Clark, 2008). Arguably, chances are that a new hire may or may not add value to the business depending on their potential. The strategies that may apply to outline the position’s details In order, to outline the requirements of a job position a number of strategies have to come in to play. For a start, the priority should be on the job related functions in that the key aspects of the job position should come first. Secondly, the general language should be comprehensible and readily understandable to any reader. The language should be clear and having action verbs to illustrate the positions requirements. Another strategy that would apply would be the nondisclosure of any confidential company information so that it does not get to the business rivals. This will be detrimental if the information falls in to the wrong hands. Moreover, the marketed position should also carry with it little background company information. Lastly when outlining the position details, it is of the essence to ensure that the information on how to apply for the position appears somewhere within the job position details. This will be of help to those interested in filling out the job position. Stating the duties within a job description In order for a job placing to be effective, it needs to state the duties bound to the position in

Reflection on second Presidential debate 2012 Essay

Reflection on second Presidential debate 2012 - Essay Example One of Obama’s strengths is that he spoke with a calm confidence that allowed him to think and answer soberly the attacks that have been thrown at him. He answered every question very clearly and he seemed extremely comfortable answering all the questions, knowing just how to answer them in a professional manner. I did not find any weakness for Obama in this debate. Romney’s strength is that, he is very good at pointing out the issues which are public concerns and used that to clarify the issues with Obama. His weakness is his obvious inability to send his points across very well regarding what he wants to do and he was not able to defend himself with reasonable answers when Obama questioned him. This debate helped Obama gain enormous support especially from among the middle class and the women because he did a great performance showing that he is going to support them in many areas. On the contrary, this debate hurt Romney because he did not do a good job in answering the questions. I am inclined to support Obama because I like his platform on supporting education for everyone and trying to create equality in the society. I don’t like the platform of Romney which is focusing only on supporting and seeking benefit for the rich people like

Preferred Stock Essay Example for Free

Preferred Stock Essay Preferred stock is a security that, similar to debt, promises a well-defined (specified) but not necessarily constant contractual cash flow (dividend) to the holders of the security. Unlike debt, it does not cause the firm to be subject to bankruptcy if the dividends are not paid. The term preferred stock implies that this security is in a more favorable position than the common stock. This conclusion is not likely to be valid for an individual investor paying taxes at a high rate on dividends. A corporate investor might like preferred stock because of a70%â€Å"dividend-received deduction†. The corporate tax savings associated with interest on debt make it difficult for preferred stock to compete with debt in the non-regulated sector of corporate activity. Also, the capital gains and tax deferred possibilities for individual investors of common stock give common stock tax advantages over preferred stock with a contractual dividend and little chance of capital gains. Preferred stock has historically been important to regulated public utilities, and it is likely to be approximately 10 percent of a typical public utility’s capital structure. Preferred stock is a hybrid form of capital, possessing a mixture of debt and common stock characteristics. Like the interest on debt, its dividends may be fixed over time. However, â€Å"participating† preferred stock shares income with common stock according to some prearranged formula and other preferred stock may pay a dividend that is linked to some independent measure such as the yield on government bonds. Like common stock, preferred stock is generally treated as equity capital for corporate tax purposes, so its dividends are paid from corporate earnings that have been taxed. Preferred stock generally has a perpetual life, although it may have a finite life, and it may have a call price specified and even a sinking fund where stock is to be repurchased by the firm in the open market. It is important to the issuing firm and to the investor that nonpayment of the preferred stock dividend does not trigger bankruptcy. Normally, common stock dividends cannot be paid until all past due preferred dividends have been paid or the preferred stockholders have been compensated by some other means. Preferred stock dividends have to be approved by the board of directors before they become a legal liability of the corporation. Preferred stock generally does not have voting rights, but if a preferred stock dividend is passed over, the preferred stockholders sometimes have the right to select one or more members of the board of directors. Although the dividends on some preferred stock are allowed as a tax deduction, currently in the United States dividends of preferred stock are not normally deductible for taxes by a corporation. This tends to limit the use of preferred stock by corporations.

Obstacles In Team Dynamics Essay -- Teamwork

Obstacles in Team Dynamics Abstract Students face obstacles on a daily basis. These may include personal, financial obstacles or obstacles at work. There are many ways to deal with them, and due to human nature, they are dealt with uniquely. Working within a team environment brings its own obstacles. This paper will discuss obstacles in team dynamics and how to overcome them. Obstacles in Team Dynamics By the time people reach adulthood, they have gone through many obstacles in their lives. Perhaps an individual has been passed over at work, had someone close to them die, lost a job, or just lost direction. Those are some of life's many obstacles. As part of a group, there are obstacles that have to be overcome in a team environment. What are they and how does an individual get past the issues that arise in team dynamics? The prevalence of obstacles inserted into a team dynamic increases the likelihood that a team will fail in its mission. What is Team Dynamics? First, we will answer the question, "What is team dynamics?" "A team is defined as a group of two or more individuals engaged in some joint action with a specific mission or goal. Team dynamics are defined as the motivating and driving forces that propel a team toward its goal or mission." (Six Sigma Team Dynamics, The Elusive Key to Project Success). There is usually much diversity in a group. We have different ethnic backgrounds, intelligence, goalsÂ…. Humans in general are non-trusting. Building up trust in a team is not easy. No matter how hard he works, grades could still be low due to poor performance of another team member. Taking individual responsibility for everyone's grades is not an option. Point of view

View â€Å"l maintain that the Ells started it all, but Gem, who was four ears my senior, said It started long before that. † (chapter 1, page 1) I know this book Is written In 1st person point of view by the words I and me. The point of view Impacts the story because you are able to experience the narrator's feelings about everything happening. Simile â€Å"†¦ Her hand was as wide as a bed slat. † (chapter 1, page 6) This example of a simile is comparing Scaloppini's hand to a bed slat. This comparison puts a vivid picture in my head of how wide her had is. Cliffhanger â€Å"Attic's arrival was the second reason I wanted to quit the game. The first reason happened the day I rolled into the Raddled front yard. Through all the headlining, quelling of nausea and Gem yelling, I had heard another sound, so low I could not have heard it from the sidewalk. Someone inside the house was laughing. † (chapter 4, page 45) This was the cliffhanger at the end of this chap ter. It describes Scout hearing Boo Raddled laugh from Inside his house. The author Is leading the audience In suspense, making us wonder what Is going to happen next. Imagery â€Å"We strolled silently down the sidewalk, listening to porch swings creaking with the weight of the neighborhood, listening to the soft night-murmurs of the grown people on our street. † (chapter 6, page 57) In my mind, I can hear the porch swings creaking and the soft night murmurs. The descriptive words used adds meaning to the text by creating suspense as well as allowing you to put sound with the picture you create in our mind.Comment â€Å"Hurry, hon.,† said Tactics. â€Å"Here's your shoes and socks. † â€Å"Stupidly, I put them on. â€Å"Is It morning? † â€Å"No It's a little after one. Hurry now† (chapter 8, page 77) When Tactics told Scout to hurry and get out of the house, at midnight, it made me worry. Many different things came to mind, like†¦ Was there a death in the family, was the house on fire, or did someone go to the emergency room. All this adds intensity to the story and has me hanging on the edge of my seat wanting to read more.Oxymoron â€Å"It was a happy cemetery (chapter 12, page 135) By adding this oxymoron In the text, it makes me realize how gross, smelly, Junky, and polluted this cemetery was. Personification â€Å"Doors slammed, engines coughed, and they were gone. † (chapter 15, page 175) This example of personification allows the reader to understand how quickly this â€Å"Thomas Jefferson once said that all men are created equal†¦ † (chapter 20, page 233) This is an allusion because the phrase comes from The Declaration Of Independence ND when reading it, it makes you think about or picture The Declaration Of Independence being in your hand.By putting this allusion in the book it adds more meaning to the point the narrator is trying to get across and allows you to understand and read this pa rt with more meaning. Metaphor â€Å"Cecil Jacobs is a big fat hen† (chapter 29, page 307) A metaphor is described to the left because its comparing Cecil Jacobs to a big fat hen. This is a good description allowing the reader to understand exactly how fat Cecil is. Irony Tactics was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Raddled porch was enough. † (chapter 31, page 321) The irony of this sentence is the children were always trying to get Boo out of his house so they could see him but later learned he was in his house watching over and protecting them. The irony adds meaning to the text because the children are finally able to realize that what Boo was doing was not harming them, in fact he was helping keep them safe.

Use Archetypes to Create Literary Characters

Use Archetypes to Create Literary Characters Use Archetypes to Create Literary Characters Use Archetypes to Create Literary Characters By Mark Nichol In essence, any literary character is drawn from one or more archetypes. An archetype is basically the pattern for a character, associated with a trait or a concept. Archetypes are most easily recognized in genre fiction science fiction, fantasy, horror, thriller but they are applicable to any fiction, whether of high or low literary aspiration. The key is to select one or more archetypes as just the first step in character building. But there are many types of archetypes from various belief systems and other sources. Try, for example, associating a character with one of the figures from the Chinese zodiac boar, dog, dragon, horse, goat, monkey, ox, rabbit, rat, rooster, snake, and tiger each of which is endowed with a complex array of both positive and negative traits (which I’ll let you research for yourself). For that matter, what’s your character’s (Western) astrological sign? (You don’t have to believe in astrology or any other belief system to derive characters from it.) Alternatively, draw on mythology, legends, fairy tales, or folklore, or existing literature, including Shakespearean characters, or on Tarot cards, for that matter. (The noncharacter cards can inspire you to develop the plot, too.) Here are some classic archetypes, including some based on Jungian psychology, to get you started: Child Guardian Herald Hermit Hero Hunter Judge Mentor Sage Shadow Shaman Sidekick Trickster Wanderer Note that there are often multiple subtypes. Heroes are especially variable: They can be loners, or collaborators, they can be willing, or unwilling, they can be comic, serious, or tragic, they can be cheerful, or cynical. Combinations of archetypes are easily achieved, too; a mentor can be a guardian, a hermit, a judge, a sage, a shaman, a trickster, or a wanderer as well, or two or more of the above. The personality enneagram, a nine-pointed array of personality types, might also be a useful reference for character building. The nine types follow: Achiever Enthusiast Helper Leader Loyalist Mediator Observer Reformer Romantic You can research enneagrammatic types further to identify their typical desires and fears, virtues and vices, and the like. Consider these psychological types based on the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator psychometric assessment: introversion/extroversion, sensing/intuition, thinking/feeling, and judgment/perception. (Everyone is a combination of both types in each pair, but in different ratios.) Also, evaluate your character on their relative affinity for other people, for things, and for information. Again, everyone has an aptitude for interpersonal relationships, for working with objects or devices, and for receiving, processing, and sending data, but they possess these talents to differing extents. What does your character’s people/things/information pie chart look like? Marketers, mechanics, and mathematicians are primarily people, things, and information oriented respectively, but their personalities include amounts of the other two elements as well. Have you employed any of these strategies to create characters? What are some others you can think of? Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Development of the Modern Railroad in America - Essay Example In 1740 the machine with the cylinder in length of 2,74 m and diameter of 76 cm during one day performed the work which brigades of 25 person and 10 horses, working in shifts, were carrying out for a week. Nevertheless, machine of Newcomen was far from perfection. It transformed to mechanical energy only about 1% of thermal energy and as a consequence, devoured huge amount of fuel, that, however, had no special value when the machine worked on collieries. About the invention of Newcomen it is possible to say, that it was really steam machine, more truly, the pair atmosphere machine. Therefore the inventor of the steam machine is the Englishman Thomas Newcomen who has developed the pair atmosphere machine in 1712. During same time in England James Uatt also worked on the creation of the steam machine. Debugging the model of the pair atmosphere Newcomen's machines, Uatt was convinced of low efficiency of similar machines. It was clear, that the basic lack of machine of Newcomen was the heating and cooling of the cylinder. Uatt removed this lack. Subsequently the universal steam engine of double action with continuous rotation (Uatt's steam machine) received a wide circulation and played a significant role in transition to a mechanical production. Since 1800 to 1821 Northern war was held. ... Since 1800 to 1821 Northern war was held. So the further development of railway transportation was stopped for some time. But steam machines which were created at the end of 18 centuries had the big popularity. Modern safe position of railways of Northern America is caused by unprecedented growth of freight traffic. This situation promotes also to rise in branch of manufacture of a rolling stock as the railway companies increase transportation capacities. Since then the financial position of the large companies has become stronger, demand for their services exceeds the offer. These changes bring favorable prospects to the railway companies. For many railway companies of Northern America the last years were successful from the point of view of growth of transportations and, hence, incomes. The stage-by-stage decision of these problems and a general economic situation allowed the bases for positive forecasts of Northern America railways development. Political science essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Political science - Essay Example There are safeguards put in place by the founding fathers to prevent power from being concentrated in just one man, precisely to forestall the tyranny they had suffered from its colonial master of Great Britain and its king. The government is composed of its three co-equal and independent branches which are the presidency, the legislature or Congress (Senate and the lower House) and also its judiciary. These three branches serve as check and balance on each other so that no one in government accumulates so much power that can give rise to dictators and despots. With presidential elections scheduled next year and Pres. Barack Obama up for a re-election, political discourse is rightfully focused on the awesome powers of the presidency. However, the checks and balances that the three co-equal branches of the federal government mandates the U.S. president to operate within the bounds of law referred to as the â€Å"separation of powers concept† in governance (Hargrove 8). This set-up stifles what the president can do and cannot do; this may be the cause of some disappointment expressed by U.S. citizens. Constraints – it is not very correct to think that the American president today is a weak president. Pres. Obama has to contend with the powers of Congress to more effectively govern because the Democrats lost a lot during the last mid-term elections in November 2010. Public discontent had translated into the loss of six Senate seats, more than sixty House seats and ten governorships which strengthened the hand of the Republican Party. The president is no longer in command of both houses of the Congress which means it is now more difficult to pass new legislation, such as resolving the debt ceiling limits and federal budget deficits. The recommended cuts are still being debated until now with no results (Newton-Small 1) but the president can cite some solid achievements, namely passing the stimulus act which prevented another Great

On the other hand, the in-betweens embody a combination of the Regulars daily routine and Uber moderns mind set. Thus, there is a large gap between how the three youngster groups prefer products features. Regular: they are conservative buyers who look for established brand watch. They prefer durability, products functions and value over cost. By contract, the results for keywords such as Swatch Vietnam, dai ly Swatch give 242.000 addresses; however, the authorised dealers website is not among the top results. Thus, this is very inconvenience for customers to find the website. Few added values A part from branding and designing, there is few added values from Swatch watches as compare to competitors products. In terms of additional functions, durability and battery lifetime, Casio watches are move competitive over Swatch. Threats: Threats from competitors (High) A major threat which Swatch has to confront is the fierce competition of rivalry brands such as Casio G-shock, Casio Standard, Tommy Hilfiger and so on. Especially Casio Vietnam, this firm has built a wide and large distribution network, with roughly 36 stores in HCM and about 6 stores in HN. Threats from replica watches (Low) On the other hand, counterfeits of branded watches also pose an implicit risk. Firstly, they are cheap. Spending about US$25 US$75, people can have a replica of luxury watch which is difficult to be detected just by judging its appearance. Secondly, replica watches are selling in many places and in the internet without being banned by the government. Threats from substitute (Medium) The large number of mobile phones used in Vietnam is another threat to Swatch. However, mobile phones are vulnerable to water and their batteries are not last for long and must be charged daily. Threats from governments policy (Medium) Finally, the high imported tax on watches of Vietnam government increases the costs of the Swatch distributor and adds higher VAT to the end customers. Consequently, the profit margin for the dealer goes down while the retail prices rise up. Opportunities: The increasing Vietnamese household income There is a bright prospect for Swatch watches as Vietnam economic is growing relatively fast. There is an estimated 77% in HN households and 67.5% in HCM achieved middle income rank and above (Nielsen). Hence, increasing income can boost up the demand for quality wrist watches. Segmentation and targeting: Segmentation: Variable Typical breakdowns Geographic North Vietnam Ha Noi Middle Vietnam Da Nang South Vietnam Ho Chi Minh, Can Tho Demographic Gender Male Female Age 0-10 10-14 14-17 18-25 26-35 36-49 50-64 65+ Psychology Life style Regular In-betweens Uber Modern Targeting: Regarding geographic variable, there are five key cities in Vietnam (Nielsen). However, only HN and HCM can be targeted markets. First of all, there are considerable high expenses to open a Swiss wrist watch store due to high stocking costs, renting and interest rate. On the other hand, Swatch should invest more in HN and HCM market in order to achieve sustainability and profitability. Males and females at age 15-25 will be the target group of the firm. Because the designs of the Swatch Original are shaped as youthful, witty and colourful, which are symbol of youth. Following that, the choice market is narrowed down to 50% of the young Vietnamese who are fashion seekers (In-betweens and Uber modern group). Positioning: In order to incorporate with the differentiation strategy, Swatch Original watches will be positioned based on its two main advantages: Swiss made quality and youthful design. On the other hand, the Original watches have higher value as compare to Casio Standard in overall (figure). Hence, the products should be positioned as more value more price. Objectives: Marketing objectives: Increase brand awareness in HN and HCM market by 20% by the end of 2011 Financial objectives: Increase sales volume by 15% by the end of 2011 Marketing programmes: Marketing mix Product policy: The product choice is the Original family which embody for youthful, artistic and outlandish. New designs should be developed regularly and new collections must be released each year because the young Vietnamese are well updated to the new trends of global youngsters Regarding quality, it is vital that Swatch watches must satisfy the customers expectation of the products. Basically, the watches have to be water-resistant (up to 100 feet) and durable enough to take certain levels of impact without being scratched or broken. Additionally, packaging should also be designed artistically in order to contribute to the brand image and satisfy customers expectation. Place policy: Push strategy In short-term, Swatch watches are distributed mainly through the authorised dealers retail outlets and its website. In long-term, as the Vietnam market grows mature, Swatch manufacturer should consider open Swatch stores which are decorated in artistic style and sell only Swatch watches. These selling entities will polish the brand image and become a channel to communicate the firms campaigns to customers. Furthermore, new Swatch stores should be opened in other cities which have high household income such as Hai Phong, Can Tho and Da Nang, etcà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦.. However, these stores are required to locate in good location and well decorated. Pull strategy To adapt with customers expectation and to retain their loyalty, a pull strategy must be implemented in which customers can order their favourite watches through the authorised distributor, who in turn asks the Swatch manufacturer for those products. Regarding an important source of Swatch watches information, the website of TDC Ltd. should be improved. Actions that the firm should take are re-designing and working with a SEO (Search Engine Optimization) agency. These steps aim at raising the websites attractiveness and improving its accessibility. By contract, information about pricing, watches specification and new collections must also be updated regularly. Pricing policy: Pricing from the Swatch manufacturer to the distributor A cost-based value approach should be employed by Swatch manufacturer. The pricing to the wholesaler is set by taking total production costs plus desired margin. Thus, a fair price can be offered to the distributor. Furthermore, as businessmen are very price conscious, the firm should also leverage them by price promotion. Pricing from the distributor to customers Value-based pricing policy should be employed for Swatch watches. As Swatch watches quality and designs are highly evaluated. Hence, the price should not be low; otherwise, it may confuse customers about the watches value. On the other hand, the pricing also reflect the value of Swatch watches against Casio Standard. So the products price should ranged from US$60- US$80 On the other hand, a pricing relation policy should also be implemented. For customers who have purchased more than three watches, they will receive a loyalty card which offer 15% discount for next purchases. This policy is not only aim to incentive customers but also build a firm footing for Swatch community in Vietnam in future. Promotion policy: A promotion policy is built to retain customer loyalty and leverage them to re-purchase Swatchs watches. Two types of sales promotion that will be applied are loyalty card and free gift giving on special occasions. Marketing communication mix: In order to achieve to the firms objectives in 2011, it is vital that Swatch must employ different media channels to reach its targeted customers. Three approaches that will be applied are advertising, public relations and sales promotion. These media channels are not only being utilised to convey the brand message and image but also to introduce a fashion trend to young Vietnamese. Finally, product features such as quality and designs must be emphasised in the media message. Advertising: (see detail in appendix C) Advertising on magazines and newspapers for youth Advertising in social media such as Facebook, Twitter, etcà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦. Advertising in internet media Advertising in TVs Public relations: (see detail in appendix C) Holding flash mob events Sales promotion Where as advertising and public relations are implemented to increase Swatch watches awareness and sales volume. The promotion approach is used to retain customer. Two types of sale promotion are loyalty program and free gift offering. As a result, their financial availability is mostly depended on their parents. Which this in mind, wrist watches which cost them US$ 60- 80 will be considered as expensive products. Thus, Swatch watches are classified as high involvement products. On the other hand, Swatch watches are fashion accessories which youngsters can use them to express their style, make them feel cool and fresh. Thus, Swatch watches involve high emotional responses. Regarding reasons for favourite brand (figure 3), it is clear that products quality, designs have significant impacts on Vietnamese youth by 59%, 39% respondents respectively. In contract, these elements engage high emotional responses as they are mostly based on customers perceived value. Hence, quality, designs should be focus points in Swatch media campaigns. In conclusion, FCB Grid suggests that Swatch advertising campaigns should be creative and inspire customers by psychological benefits. Appendix C Communication mix choice Advertising: Advertising on magazines and newspapers for youth Newspapers and magazines is the number three source of information and news to young Vietnamese (figure 5). They use this channel to pull out information of various aspects which they concern include entertainment, fashion trends, news and so on. Thus, it is confident to say that printed media can deliver the brand image and message to a majority of Vietnamese youth. Advertising in social media This approach is absolute must in order to reach the targeted groups. Social networking is a new trend in Vietnam, with half of the online youngster engages in (figure 6). The advantage of this media channel is that information can be spread and shared quickly and widely as internet users are keen in communicating with others. On the other hand, young Vietnamese also pose a positive attitude toward brand interaction on-line. They accept to interact with the brands in many activities from e-mail to news and social (figure 7). Thus, a Swatch community can be built to provide not only information about the products but also to offer promotions and provide a fan space. Furthermore, through social networking, global contests of Swatch (CreArt, etcà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦..) can be introduced to Vietnamese. Famous cyber communities include: Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. Advertising in internet media Internet magazines or information portals for youth are viable mediums for Swatch. They are Vietnamese youngster favourite sources of information in which they rank number two among the others (figure 5). The advantage of this media include: low costs, wide market coverage. Popular websites include: www.hihihehe.com, www.kenh14.vn, www.hoahoctro.vn, www.zing.vn Advertising in TVs TV media should be considered as a channel to reach customer. It is reported that television is the youngsters number one source of news and information. Its advantages are wide reach (% of targeted customers who watch the advertisement) and high frequency (number if time each customer watches the advertisement). Hence, TV advertising can highly increase the brand awareness among young customers. However, there are relatively high costs (costs to produce television commercials and costs for booking TV channels) in utilising this medium. However, it is notable that the advertisements should be creative in order to impress the young audiences. Furthermore, advertisement must be launched at an effective frequency to maximise the effect while spending reasonable budgets. Public relations: Holding special events is an indirect way to advertise for the products to the targeted customers. Alternatively, TDC limited can also give aid to events that are attractive to young customers. It is noticed that special events must be creative and bring joyful to audiences. Consequently, the products image is expected to be benefited from word of mouth and news on magazines. Holding flash mob events Recently, there is a new trend of the youngsters, flash mob event. It is recorded that three big events (with over 1200 participants) and a lot of small ones has taken place in HN and HCM in 2010. Thus, TDC limited can contact with key members of flash mob groups to offer them sponsorship. In return, these members will indirectly promote for Swatch watches and influence the preference of the other event participants.
